How do developers prefer art files?
There are quite a few software options that designers have when working on web mockups. Some, enjoy InDesign as they are more comfortable with it, while others created layer files through Fireworks PNGs. By far, the standard is PSDs and we go as far as quoting project duration times from PSDs to URLs. In addition to the photoshop document itself there are a few things that really help developers understand what designers are intending. We'll list out a few below and hopefully that helps you bridge the communication gap.
- Provided layered PSD files as a delivery to your web developer
- Make sure to consult with them about functionality before you send comps to your client.
- Organize layers in folder sets, naming them appropriately and coloring them when necessary.
- Include rollover/active states for navigation elements.
- Provide instructional layers when animation or transitional functionality is needed.
- Provide a style guide of hex colors for the various colors/fonts for the site.
- Ask your developer about the fonts they support before you start designing.
Hopefully these tips help you communicate more clearly with your developer and help you produce an exceptional product for your client.
